On July 14, 2011, two weeks to the day after my wife then in her seventies left hospital after a two-month stay, and coming close to death during that time, she took two resolutions. Having rationalized and expecting at that time that her days were now counted, and although a rather reserved person throughout the more than five decades we had by then spent together, a part of her personality changed overnight. Surprisingly, she became inexorably unforgiving to those who made her life hell from the age of two to sixteen—and this leads us to the purpose of this work. On that day, she revealed the following to me, despite her rather weak state of health and the long recuperation period ahead of her, and of course restated in my own way and words without the dynamics of painful emotions through which this was verbalized:

“I do not want to die before my horrible childhood is revealed, ... I do not want to hide that awful time of my life anymore, ...  because it still hurts me too much, … it has become unbearable since I left the ICU,  …  and like a boil I now must lance it, ...  help me!"

It has therefore been my self-assigned lot and sad privilege to present the malevolent forms of behavior justifying the unnecessary wounding and crippling for the rest of her life—physically, psychologically, and sociologically—of that tot, young child, and teenager. Here now—through my thoughts and especially if you read between the lines—are the muffled cries of a child in extreme psychological pain, intensified until the end of her life on the 8th of October 2019 after spending five years in a nursing home following two succeeding strokes - paralyzed, bound to a wheelchair, and unable to speak from then on. This then is Dolores Maureen Pierson, my lifelong soul mate, referred to as Helen for reasons that will become obvious in the course of your reading. The vehicle for this now takes the form of a novelized biography with all the advantages this creates for presentation as well as all the pitfalls.

My initial objective was to use the tool of an autobiography to memorialize the otherwise never-to-be-known murder of my dear ‘father’, Joseph Omer Ovide Bourdeau, and thereby identify his two murderers, my biological mother, Georgette Chevalier, and her boyfriend, Léopold Legault – before I soon enter that eternal silence myself. Doing this in the context of the wretched lives of people from a particular ghetto of Montréal in Canada. While this story pales when compared to the hell holes found in so many places around our planet, it nevertheless became a necessary background to understand the story presented here, and in great part embodies the serious damage caused when a religious establishment takes over the thoughts and behavior of a whole people – especially when the governance in place needs and seeks its support. 

It highlights in direct and indirect ways the role and absence of responsibility and lack of accountability from economically better off and more educated people in authority within my ethnic group, including the majority of politicians, the whole Church establishment, and the old traditional professions of medicine and law in the province of Québec, which chose to ignore the vast majority of its unfortunate occupants from various ghettos of poverty and despair. 

My collateral and codependent intent through this work is also to turn my own spotlight on the situation of ghetto-living in a peaceful democratic land of plenty, immense wealth, and enormous resources, as I continuously ask myself: Why? Why? Why? 

In attempts to answer this question, I, through this publication, immodestly present a partial description and understanding of life on a particular street in a particular section of Montréal, as well as offer a general outlook and background of the province of Québec in the Thirties, Forties and Fifties, which inadvertently sustained these areas of despair. This is narrated by someone, who was there, and lived it – a little guy nicknamed "Ti-Jean" - also afflicted with the general attitude in Canada at that time.

En lisant « The Tin Flute » d’abord en anglais, puis sa version originale « Bonheur d’occasion » en français, j’ai vite compris ce que Gabrielle Roy décrivait dans cet ouvrage. J'étais alors sorti de ce ghetto depuis des décennies, mais les souvenirs sont revenus forts et intacts. D’abord les scènes vécues et observées, puis les odeurs et les sons, revenait comme si aucun temps ne s’était écoulé. Suivie des sensations de désespoir ressenties il y a si longtemps, qui imprégnaient nous tous dans ce lieu à cette époque ont donc réapparu – ainsi que la peur d’un avenir désespéré ressentie par chaque résident de ce ghetto. En effet, tout cela est revenu comme un cauchemar enfoui depuis longtemps. 

Alors pour mettre également un terme partiel à cette partie de ma vie d’enfant, j'ai également décidé cette fois de :

1. 1. Faire ressortir le monde dont j'ai personnellement été témoin, et que j'ai connu intimement dans ma jeunesse. C’est à dire jusqu'à ce que je quitte une première fois et ceci pendant deux ans ce ghetto à l’âge de douze ans dans lequel j'ai grandi.

   2. Élucider certaines des conditions qui ont façonné et ont souvent poussé les personnes prises dans ce piège social.

   3. Transmettre le contexte du gouffre social entre les francophones et les anglophones de Montréal à cette époque.

   4. Observez certaines des disparités et des similitudes représentées et illustrées par deux familles immédiates très dysfonctionnelles ici au Québec – et, curieusement, notez une relation partielle et une coïncidence avec deux autres familles du Manitoba. 

   5. Je voulais faire cela à partir de ce dont je me souvenais encore en tant que jeune témoin des choses, des événements et des situations qui ont façonné la vie épouvantable endurée par les habitants du ghetto dans lequel j'ai grandi, jusqu'à ce que je le quitte une deuxième fois et définitivement un peu avant mes dix-sept ans.

Même si l'histoire vraie et triste racontée ici sur la vie misérable des habitants d'un ghetto particulier de Montréal au Canada n’est rien par rapport aux trous infernaux trouvés dans tant d'endroits sur notre planète, elle est néanmoins devenue un contexte nécessaire pour comprendre l'histoire présenté ici. Cela incarne en grande partie les graves dommages causés lorsqu’un établissement religieux s’empare des pensées et du comportement de tout un peuple – et en particulier lorsque la gouvernance en place cherche son soutien.

Ce qui suit également cet avant-propos, met en évidence de manière directe et indirecte le rôle et l'absence de responsabilité des personnes économiquement plus aisées et plus instruites, y compris la majorité des politiciens, l'Église entière, et les vieilles professions traditionnelles du Québec, qui ont choisi d'ignorer la grande majorité des malheureux des différents ghettos de pauvreté et de désespoir de la province de Québec.

This a double exercise.  

The first is one of 'tough love' addressed to my very own people, French-speaking French-Canadians from the province of Québec in Canada — a community that sadly did not take care of nor provided for, me and those like me at that most vulnerable time of life.  

The second satisfies in great part many of the frustrations I experienced from time to time about the lack of entrepreneurship and weak political will of my people during the early years of my life. My way, I suppose to vent once and for all, what I consider still as self-inflicted harm on the part of the ethnic group from which I emerged. 

Tough indeed it is, I admit, but a love of my people, nonetheless, sadly expressed in English, since my community of the Forties and Fifties did not see to it that I receive a proper French education – except for a very limited one in primary school. I was after all too poor and not Roman Catholic enough (i.e.,  I never considered myself religious at all) in that small world of Ste-Cunégonde within the broad St. Henri area of my origin, so eloquently described by Gabrielle Roy in "Bonheur d'occasion / The Tin flute".  

It is also and further an expression of hope for the future, as I peer into what I believe, we, as a community, can contribute to the generations following us as well as for the rest of the world. 

We deal with interconnected and intermingled themes through unorthodox and at times politically incorrect political discussions by adopting two general themes, that only two older soul mates impregnated with passionate outlooks, keen interests, and steeped in Canadian politics over the years are capable of – our thespians, Isabelle and Antoine, facilitating our introspection in this case.

Voici un double exercice.

Le premier est celui d'un amour qui fait mal aux premier abords adressé à mon propre peuple, les Canadiens français francophones de la province de Québec au Canada — une communauté qui, malheureusement, n'a pas pris soin de moi et de ceux qui comme moi à ce moment le plus vulnérable de la vie, ... et ni pris en charge.

 La seconde satisfait en grande partie bon nombre des frustrations que j'ai vécues de temps à autre au sujet du manque d'esprit d'entreprise et de la faible volonté politique de mon peuple au cours des premières années de ma vie. Ma façon, je suppose d'évacuer une fois pour toutes, ce que je considère toujours comme un préjudice auto-infligé de la part du groupe ethnique dont j'ai émergé.

 C'est difficile en effet, je l'admets, mais un amour de mon peuple, néanmoins, malheureusement exprimé en anglais, puisque ma communauté des années quarante et cinquante n'a pas fait en sorte que je reçoive une éducation française appropriée – sauf pour une éducation très limitée à l'école primaire. Après tout, j'étais trop pauvre et pas assez catholique romaine (c'est-à-dire que je ne me suis jamais considéré comme religieux du tout) dans ce petit monde de Ste-Cunégonde dans le vaste quartier Saint-Henri de mon origine, si éloquemment décrit par Gabrielle Roy dans « Bonheur d'occasion / La flûte d'étain ».

 C'est aussi et en outre une expression d'espoir pour l'avenir, alors que je regarde ce que je crois, nous, en tant que communauté, pouvons contribuer aux générations qui nous suivent ainsi que pour le reste du monde.

 Nous traitons de thèmes interconnectés et entremêlés à travers des discussions politiques peu orthodoxes et parfois politiquement incorrectes en adoptant deux thèmes généraux, dont seulement deux âmes sœurs plus âgées imprégnées de perspectives passionnées, d'intérêts vifs et imprégnées de politique canadienne au fil des ans sont capables de – nos théspiens, Isabelle et Antoine, facilitant notre introspection dans ce cas.

Just for the sheer luxurious pleasure of it I decided to briefly review and more fully flesh out those two thespians imagined in the airing out of key political problems and cultural issues from "Quebec 5.0".  Doing so in the form of a short story that simply began with a serendipitous, propitiously unintended, and unplanned meeting.  

A very short story suggesting that: 

It is never too late to love and passionately live with someone you never met before and this late in life, and yet do so with absolute serenity, while being able to enter with passion and discernment into opinionated discussions  without compromising such a precious friendship and relationship.

This small publication consists of small handwritten notes found here and there at the bottom of several drawers, where Dolores Maureen Pierson (1939 - 2019) left them, now gathered here, so that these few muffled cries of fear and dread, no doubt among many, persisting in the winter of her years, are not forever lost ones.
